Participate 4- Digital Rights and Responsibilities

Citizens of Digital Learning Communities, DLCs, need to agree to Acceptable Use Policies, AUP, in order to become responsible citizens. Students should be taught appropriate behavior and informed of consequences before agreeing to an Acceptable Use Policy. While filtering and blocking can be used to help protect students, ultimately students need to learn of the dangers of the internet as well as how to navigate around misinformation. Furthermore, students need to understand Fair Use and how to give credit to their sources. Teachers can help students by directing them to web-based resources that help with citations. Teachers can also use websites such as turnitin.com to be sure that students are not plagiarizing. This provides students with accountability and immediate feedback as the website informs students what percentage of the work is plagiarized.
