Participate Reflection

iNacol, the International Association for Online Learning, publishes Standards for Quality Online Teaching.

Consider the following standards:

Standard C: The online teacher plans, designs, and incorporates strategies to encourage active learning, application, interaction, participation, and collaboration in the online environment.

Standard E: The online teacher models, guides, and encourages legal, ethical, and safe behavior related to technology use.

Standard J: The online teacher interacts in a professional, effective manner with colleagues, parents, and other members of the community to support students’ success.

The Participate module has prepared me to be an effective online teacher by giving an overview of an ideal learning community including rights and responsibilities. The module required active participation on my part and introduced me to a ton of interactive tools and resources which I can in turn utilize in my digital classroom to help engage my students and provide them with opportunities to be actively involved. The part that stuck out most to me was the part about digital rights and responsibilities (Standard E). Learning about Acceptable Use Policies and Fair Use was very informational and a good reminder about the accountability that is necessary in order to help students adhere to the rules. I also explored several digital resources that can help my students become active learners and participate in the Digital Learning Community (Standard C). Finally, I was reminded of Netiquette in order to interact with stakeholders in a professional and effective manner (Standard J).
